Description: This workshop will focus on making sculptural studio works with rhyme and reason: incorporating narrative, story, purpose, or function into mixed media sculpture and installation. In the art world today, visual artists, especially the sculptor, is allowed to do almost anything, but simply because one can do anything, does that mean one should? This workshop will focus on creating well-planned mixed-media works that integrate both beauty and organization. Students will explore these issues in an attempt to develop new artistic practices and directions.
Activities: Studio projects integrating natural and man-made objects, lively discussions, critique sessions, spontaneous lawn sculptures, found object collecting at local second-hand Shops, salvage Yards, etc. All levels welcome!
Instructor: Court Bennett received his BFA from Utah State University and his MFA in sculpture at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. His sculptures are hand-constructed bio-mechanical forms, which combine materials in unconventional, dark and humorous ways. Tuition: $480
Studio Fee: $40
Enrollment: 16

Description: This class is perfect for anyone who wants to have FUN learning all aspects of sculpting in clay from a professional artist (and former NFL defensive lineman). The workshop includes lectures on creating an armature, introduction to the lost wax process, and discussions on creating bronze castings from beginning to end. With step-by-step instruction, you will create your own armature, sculpt the subject of your choice in a professional plasteline clay, and will receive plenty of one to one attention, while still being encouraged to explore your own style.
Activities: This class is suitable for students ranging from beginners to professional artists. All materials are provided for use during the week-long course, but you may bring your own tools if you wish. We encourage each student to choose their subject before the class begins and bring photographs or any material that will assist you with your work.
Instructor: Born and raised in Lehi, Utah, Mike Hamby has always had a fascination for Native American Culture and the history that shaped the land that surrounded him. Much of his childhood was spent exploring the canyons experiencing first hand the timeless wonders of Utah's history. The effect of this knowledge is evident through his work, as he has acquired a remarkable flair for bringing the richness of the past to life. His work is flavored with the vast soul of the desert, the majesty of the mountains, and the determination of the people who live there. His aggressive style and intense focus on his subject gives each piece a distinct history all their own.
Mike has been blessed with a unique combination of talents, which he has actively pursued throughout his life: artist, musician, published illustrator and retired pro football player.
Drafted from Utah State University by the Buffalo Bills in 1985, Mike managed to tackle his four years with the team with the same amount of enthusiasm that he has for life. After a career ending injury in 1989, Mike went back to his natural born talent, his artwork. He has received a wide range of commission sculpture works including Merrill Lynch, USA Today, the NFL Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and the National Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins. His largest commission Fierce Encounter towers over the entrance of Cabela's largest store in Dundee, Michigan.
Whether he is working with clay or painting, Mike's unique passion for life brings a tremendous amount of power and grace to whichever medium he chooses.

Course Description: This two day workshop will include the practice of Calligraphy and Chinese Brush Work, with an introduction into the history, philosophy and tradition of Chinese brush painting. Each lesson will be followed by a demonstration of the painting techniques. Students will gain proficiency with the brush through hands-on practice. The two days will be divided with one day devoted to calligraphy writing and the next to brush work, learning to paint in this exquisite style.
Faculty: Bill Lee's parents went to the island of Taiwan from mainland China during the civil war in 1948. He grew up in the countryside of the unspoiled subtropical paradise. As a child, he would sit in the meadow watching sunset's glorious display of colors on the low laying clouds, or gaze at the distant white herons dotting the lush green rice field waving in the breeze, or peek into the sparkling crystal droplets of the necklace beaded by the spider's web with morning dew... Bill chose to express his passion for the beauty of nature using a paintbrush and paper and believes that under an attentive mind and skilled hand these two mediums will express all the beauties a heart can feel.
