Description: This exploratory workshop is a continuation of Carlos Cortes’ successful and groundbreaking projects exploring the dialogue between dance, movement and visual arts in relation to the natural world. Select sessions will be purely movement or visual; while most, incorporating elements from both. The workshop will culminate with a performance/exhibition of works, art objects and/or evidence of the process--finding meaning in everyday objects and places.
Activities: Moving about, relating to spaces, investigating found objects, and reacting to changes in different environments (wind, sound, shapes, patterns, etc.) will be an important part of this workshop as well as the creation of site specific performances, drawing, painting and mixed media art pieces. Open to all ages, families and friends are encouraged to join this fun and original workshop!
Instructor: Carlos Cortes has the uncanny ability to ‘activate’ spaces and groups of people…engaging large audiences in collective open air dances or inspiring small groups through exploratory workshops that open the mind and releasing creative energy locked within our routine lives. Carlos Cortes is a visual and performing artist whose work has been exhibited, published and performed in Spain, UK, Holland and the USA. He studied Linguistics and Dance in Spain and received his MA in Theatre Design from the Wimbledon School of Art; London. Cortes’s current practice is focused on the relationship between human groups, their activities and the spaces they inhabit, the objects they use and the traces they leave. The artist often uses found and recycled objects as a starting point for visual art work, overlapping his creative input with the imprints left in those objects by the passing of time and the people who used them. His movement based performances incorporate visual elements and interactive events in which site-specific issues; architecture and landscape elicit a dialogue between audience and performer. Cortes’s professional experience also includes set and costume design for Arabian Nights-London,UK, Shakras (Ballet)-Florence, Italy, Odas-Zaragoza, Spain and director of Late Frost-London, UK
