Description: Get ready to use paper in a very different way! This workshop is perfect for people interested in a combination of architecture, design, engineering, book making and visual art. Participants will begin with basic techniques of paper engineering: cutting and folding paper into V-folds, strut folds, and swinging mechanisms. Followed by, learning to construct collapsible structures, and sculptural forms using different types of paper and adhesives. These techniques and concepts will be utilized by students to create their very own pop up book! Participants will be encouraged to personalize books with drawings, text, and collaged images.
Activities: All workshop materials will be provided however students are encouraged to bring images, drawings, and various collage elements to inform or to be included in final projects. Workshop will incorporate a variety of discussion topics, demonstrations and hands-on-studio time.
Instructor: Matt Shlian earned his Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Paper Engineering and Print Media from Cranbrook Academy of Art; Michigan, and his Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking and Sculpture from Alfred University; New York. Matt has shown his work at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Zeitgeist Gallery in Portland Oregon, Refine Studio in Windsor Canada, Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston Massachusetts, and The Forum Gallery in Michigan. He has presented his work and conducted workshops at The Detroit Institute of Art, the Siggraph Conference, Chicago Humanities Festival, Bowling Green State University, and Ann Arbor Michigan’s Hands On Museum. Matt currently teaches advanced Paper Engineering and Freshman Foundations at the School of Art and Design: University of Michigan, and recently wrote and published a book titled “Ghost Town-the art of Matthew Shlian”.
